I Work In Music: Week 3: Running Wires, Creating Databases and Hearing Unspeakable Things!

A blog about working in the Music Industry from those in the  Business. ~Follow Intern: Cameron through his Experiences at Sony Music~

“In previous jobs, I was constantly restricted from listening to music. Now, it’s my job to listen to music!

My name is Cameron Bartlett and I am a Strategic Marketing intern with Sony Music Entertainment at Provident Label Group’s Essential Music Publishing department. Thanks to all who have been following.

“That is one reason why this internship stands out as one of the best!”

My Boss, a man I highly respect named Devon, is so very understanding and accommodating. In a high work-flow business as the music industry it would seem unheard of to speak such things. That is one reason why this Provident internship stands out as one of the best. I’m treated like a person and my work is valued and appreciated. I am put in charge of important tasks for the department, and I don’t mean head of the morning breakfast list. Provident aims to personalize each internship as to actually prepare me for a future in the music industry. That is one of the things that set it apart for me from other to which I had applied for this summer.
We have a Really Comfortable Lounge Area!
Sure, I do jobs that aren’t necessarily related to my field. Like today, I helped set up the surround sound system for our lounge area. I wasn’t forced into anything, however. I offered to help and I was thanked for my help.

“If I were making copies all day, I would have missed such opportunities to grow.”

For those looking for an internship out there, seek to find one that will help you to excel by allowing for you to utilize your own specific skill set and be challenged in areas that you were not previously as capable. For instance, I have been put in charge of categorizing all of our music into a database which we will use for presentations and so forth. This is an important piece of our publishing/marketing department’s resources. I have dramatically improved in being able to identify music and how to describe it’s content because I was given a task that required and had to adapt quickly. If I were making copies all day, I would have missed such opportunities to grow.

Oh and for the Best Part!

Ok so I was listening to some music coming from the hallway and my boss invited me in to listen to a song from literally two of my favorite artists that they had just written last night. I was one of the first people to listen to it. I get opportunities like this ALL THE TIME It was so fun :)
