After the freshmen release of Forefront Record’s Abandon’s “Searchlights” many were worried that Abandon was unable to release an album that contained a majority of new music. “Searchlights” after all only contained 4 new tracks and everything else had been recycled from previous EP’s. However now with the ever growing popularity of the Texas pop rockers it was time to answer their critics, the answer is “Control”
Control opens with the song “Feel it in your heart” which immediately tells the listener that they are about to hear something different. The song incorporates the same pop rock fans loved on Searchlights but there’s also a very evident dance feel to it. This dance vibe also appears on many other tracks on this album. “Help”"Let Go” and “S.O.S” are other examples of this musical diversity. Also present are the slower ballads such as “New Years Day” and “Your Love Goes On”. “Hero” also makes an appearance on the album with a new piano line to make it fit better with the rest of the album.
Lyrically this album doesn’t wavier from the deep, encouraging lyrics found on Searchlights. But here there is an underlining theme of faith and our lives. “Help” talks about our need for God “New Years Day” sings of the change in our lives when Christ comes in with his restoring mighty power and wipes away our sins. “Feel it in Your Heart” is about how faith doesn’t mean a thing until we feel it in our hearts until we begin to really live out that faith in our hearts.
Just one of the stand out songs on this album is “Under Fire” another dance style song about facing persecution as Christians. Lead singer Josh Engler sings “And though we haven’t see your face, we know we walk by faith, we are under fire, but it only burns our doubt away” Think about the strength of that last statement, it’s good that we get persecuted as Christians because it takes away our doubt as Christians.
If you are looking for a great album to add to a collection of any kind this one will make the perfect add. You also may want to get this album for the Christian Pop-Rock enthusiast in your family. This album will encourage and lift you up even after the next Abandon album comes out.
