When I first listened to Not Without A Fight, I wasn’t sure what to expect. But boy did New Found Glory deliver. It is essentially a return to their punk/pop punk roots and faster-paced musical style that hits all the right chords. Produced and recorded by blink 182′s Mark Hoppus in his home studio, this is, in my opinion, one of the best records this band has released to date. The effort that was put into every one of its twelve songs is clearly evident; each song is powerful and memorable in its own respect and gives this genre a big push in the right direction. It stands out greatly, to me at least, in comparison with the crap I often hear on the radio today (unfortunately I doubt any of the songs gets much or any airtime).

Lets look at some of my favorite songs from the album. The album starts off with a bang with “Right Where We Left Off”, it’s lyrics being the source of the album’s title. The songs catchy intro and interesting bridge make for a great song that sets the mood for the rest of the album. It leads into “Don’t Let Her Pull You Down”, another brilliant song that carries the album along with great momemtum. The music video for this song is also great and it would be worthwhile to check it out. Next is the comparitavely softer but still energetic “Listen To Your Friends”, which I constantly find myself humming in the shower or when I’m alone at night. “47″ is another catchy and interesting song that manages to find itself stuck in my head many times as well. “Truck Stop Blues” is one that I don’t listen to enough, and I feel guilty because it’s a really unique song. Next is one my of favorite songs off the album, “Tangled Up”. Paramore’s Hayley Williams lends her vioce to this track, making it a beautifully melodic song that serves as a sort of pivot point, as it is at the halfway point in the compilation. It breaks up the mood nicely and is a great transition into “I’ll Never Love Again”. I feel like a broken record here, but this song is also a keeper. It has a creative rhythm and a bridge that’s on the heavier side, pulling from some of the band’s hardcore influences, but catchy as well. Next is my number one favorite song, “Reasons”. It has such a peircing and wonderful tone with the mix between acoustic and distorted guitar, the awesome main riff, and the mind-blowing end solo. Even after listening to it twenty times over it doesn’t lose any of its original power. The end of this song then sets up the pace for “Such a Mess”, which is moderately faster. This is also a good song, although it is on the lesser side of song plays in my library in comparison to the rest of the CD. “Heartless at Best” is slower and more to the point, and still has New Found Glory’s signature pop-punk feel, but is also very memorable and is worth at least a few listens. “This Isn’t You” follows up with another really catchy chorus that you’ll probably find echoing in your head later on in the day. These songs all lead to the final song off the record “Don’t Let This Be The End”. This is my second favorite song for many reasons. It is the perfect song to end the record with. The opening riff, for one reason or another, just penetrates my soul every time I hear it, making me want to dance and instantly brightening up any gloomy moment. It’s final chorus seems to send you on a farewell journey from the record with a warm, happy feeling and a message like “Yeah, the album’s over – but hey! It’s alright! I can just listen to it again!”

I normally wouldn’t go into such detail about every track, but they were all so great that I just couldn’t help myself. This is what pop punk is all about, and it’s everything that I love. Some may argue that the record is repetitive at points, but I feel that there is enough variety to keep it fresh and interesting. I applaud the creativity in songwriting and effort in bringing some of the best music out into the world. This album is solid gold, and I would feel guilty giving it anything but a perfect score.
