Digital Veil has been anticipated for sometime now. The Human Abstract has been giving us previews of the new album and frankly we only want more. With Digital Veil now available to the public everyone should be appeased. A quick history lesson, The Human Abstract released their first album Nocturne in 2006 which was amazing. The band then lost their guitarist A.J Minette. With the bands mastermind gone they released Midheaven in 2008. Saying this nicely the album was not good at all. After 3 years A.J Minette is back and Digital Veil is going to put The Human Abstract back on top.
I honestly do not know how to explain such an amazing album. For one it’s a huge come back from Midheaven. Digital Veil is heavier, faster and more technical than their previous albums. The band does what it’s supposed to do and does it well. With the genius mind of A.J Minette back and a new vocalist they have reached new limits I didn’t think were possible. 8 tracks doesn’t seem like much but The Human Abstract makes the best of each one. Each song stays in key with the others but never sound the same. The mixing is prime and overall sounds great.
The songs composed by The Human Abstract are unbelievable. Digital Veil starts off with “Elegiac.” This is a beautiful instrumental intro. It is a flashback to Nocturne with the classical acoustic guitar solo into a powerful electric guitar melody. But wait it gets better, the next three songs “Complex Terms,” “Digital Veil” and “Faust” blow you even further out of the water. All these three have great aspects. Amazing guitar, technicality and amazing vocals. Travis Richter has a great range from bellowing lows to uplifting cleans that can put a smile on your face. A.J Minette also does the piano parts throughout the album which bring us back to the first album which give it an overall more unique feeling.
The best song off this album is without a doubt “Antebellum.” This song is a masterpiece. A.J Minette’s guitar work is ecstatic. With a classical intro in the beginning into a chugging breakdown with angelic voices and ambiance in the background. The melodies that are made completely blew my mind. The song takes twists and turns for the better that leave you waiting for more. Luckily it is over 7 minutes long so it is more than long enough but I guaranty you will leave this song on repeat a few times before you go to the next.
The last 3 songs on the album keep up the flow even after antebellum. “Holographic Sight” is the heaviest song. It punches you in the face right off the bat. “Horizon to Zenith” has some beautiful piano and is Travis Richter’s best performance with his clean vocals hands down. The album ends with “Patterns” which isn’t as exciting as every other song but I felt it wasn’t a bad way to end. There isn’t one bad song off this album.
Digital Veil is probably one of the best albums of the year. It is definitely the biggest comeback any band has probably made as well. I look forward to listening to this album through without skipping a single song. A.J Minette’s return is what has made this album so amazing. I can only anticipate what their next album will sound like and how much better it can get. I plan on seeing The Human Abstract live this year without a doubt. This album gets a 9/10.
