Of all the concerts i’ve been to, I can honestly say that Jimmy Eat World and We Were Promised Jetpacks was one of the most enjoyable ones. Jimmy Eat World (JEW) has always been one of may favorite bands. In fact, they were my first concert I went to on my own. I saw them along with Paramore back in April of 2008. Even back then they did an amazing job. Anyways, on to the show.
Upon entering the House Of Blues I noticed a sign on at the box office that said “Sold Out” on it. This of course was no surprise considering that it was Jimmy Eat World. Once inside the venue I was just blown away with how many people were in there. The floor, middle, and top balcony were completely full. There wasn’t an open spot anywhere! As we made our way to the front to set up for photos we got the feeling that JEW was playing alone because we could only see one drum set and not many guitars set up. We soon learned we were wrong.
Around 8:15 a man came on stage and told us this story about how his band has gone through some trouble and was still awaiting their equipment. He then told us he was going to start without them and played an acoustic song. Nearing the end of the song, the rest of the members rushed out on stage with the equipment and began setting up. They were finally all there to play. We Were Promised Jetpacks was their name and I thought they put on a great performance and start to the show.
After some long anticipation Jimmy Eat World came out on stage opening with “Bleed American” and the crowd went crazy. If I hadn’t been sitting side stage I would have been going crazy in the pit as well. After opening with that, they proceeded to play lots of other awesome songs like “Your New Aesthetic”, “A Praise Chorus”, “My Best Theory” and much more. JEW had a really great stage presence. They put off lots of energy and got everyone pumped up and excited. As I looked into the crowd I could see almost every person jumping, smiling, and screaming lyrics back at JEW. They had an awesome light show to complement the great music as well. The show was going awesome as expected.
A little over an hour into the show, they stated that they were playing their last song which was “Goodbye Sky Harbor”. I was well aware that they were coming out for an encore because they didn’t play many of their big songs and I had seen the set list. After the encore, Jimmy Eat World came out and played their last 4 songs which included “12.23.95″, “Pain”, “The Middle”, and “Sweetness”, in that order. It was an awesome show closer. As always, I was disappointed the show had commenced but was too excited to get upset over it. I felt very privileged to have been there.
In a nutshell, Jimmy Eat World along with their opener We Were Promised Jetpacks put on an awesome show that night. If you haven’t seen either of them then you need to get on that ASAP!
